Nigeria's Oil Minister, Mrs Diezani
Alison-Madueke has denied being
hospitalized in London. A report on a
US based website had reported that
Mrs. Madueke is currently undergoing
treatment in a London hospital for an
undisclosed illness. But in statement
made available to elombah.com this
afternoon, the minister of
Petroleum Resources
debunked the report saying; "On the
contrary to recently published articles
concerning my health, I haven’t been
hospitalized in London. Both my family
and I are well."
Though she did not say whether she
had been hospitalized elsewhere but
not in London, the denial came in the
wake of speculation over the actual
state of health of Nigeria’s first lady,
Dame Patience Jonathan and doused
speculations that another member of
President Goodluck Jonathan’s cabinet
may have been hospitalised in London.
Sources at the Ministry of Petroleum,
Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, confirmed this
morning that the minister indeed
travelled out of the country hale and
hearty last week, but refused to
disclose when she was billed to return
to the country.
The online report, based on
information purportedly obtained from
an unnamed doctor, had said that
though the minister is not in
immediate danger, her condition which
was described as “abnormal cell
development” is “potentially serious”
and “assumed a dire dimension
recently,” which necessitated the
decision to admit her in the hospital.
The report said Mrs. Madueke has been
travelling to London monthly for the
treatment of the condition before the
recent development.
There are also speculations that the
minister was in the London hospital as
a result of stress.
