Pakistan acquits girl of blasphemy charges

Charges against Rimsha Masih of
burning Quran have been thrown out
after police accused cleric of framing
her.
Pakistan court has thrown out
charges against a young Christian girl
accused of blasphemy in a case that
drew international condemnation,
lawyers said.
Rimsha Masih spent three weeks on
remand in an adult jail after she was
arrested on August 16 for allegedly
burning pages from the Quran.
She was released on bail in
September and police have since told
the courts that she was not guilty and
that a cleric who allegedly framed her
should face trial instead.
"The court has quashed the case,
declaring Rimsha innocent," her
lawyer Akmal Bhatti told the AFP news
agency.
Hafiz Mohammed Khalid Chishti, a
cleric who first gave police the burned
papers as evidence against her, was
detained on September 1 for
desecrating the Quran and tampering
with evidence.
An official medical report classified
Rimsha as "uneducated" and aged 14,
but with a mental age younger than
her years.
Others have said she is as young as
11-years-old and suffers from Down's
Syndrome.
Paul Bhatti, the only Christian member
of Pakistan's federal cabinet,
confirmed that the case had been
thrown out by the high court in the
capital Islamabad.
"I welcome this order. Justice has
been done and the law of the land
has been upheld by the court," he
told AFP.
"It will send out a positive image of
Pakistan in the international
community that there is justice for all
and that society has risen up for
justice and tolerance," he added.
Rimsha and her family, who have
been in fear for their lives since the
allegations, were moved to an
undisclosed location after her release
on bail on September 8.

"Pastors With Private Jets An Embarrassment To Christianity", Says Bishop Kukah-The Nation

The acquisition of private jets
by Christian leaders
diminishes the moral voice
of the church in the fight
against corruption, the
Catholic Bishop of Sokoto
Diocese, Most Rev Matthew
Kukah, declared yesterday.
He spoke against the
backdrop of the presentation
of a private jet to the
National President of the
Christian Association of
Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo
Oritsejafor, by members of
his church during the
celebration of his 40th
anniversary in the ministry
penultimate Saturday.
Kukah, who was guest
speaker at the annual
Founder’s Day Anniversary
lecture of Providence Baptist
Church in Lagos, described
exhibition of such opulence
by church leaders as
embarrassing.
The fiery cleric who spoke on
‘Church and the state in the
pursuit of the common
good’, said: “The stories of
corrupt men and women
being given recognition by
their churches or mosques
as gallant sons and
daughters and the
embarrassing stories of
pastors displaying
conspicuous wealth as we
hear from the purchases of
private jets and so on clearly
diminish our moral voice.”
Kukah, who was represented
by the Administrator of Holy
Cross Cathedral Lagos, Rev.
Monsignor Pascal
Nwaezeapu, also expressed
displeasure with the
perceived closeness of the
CAN leadership to the
corridors of powers.
He said such alliance will
weaken the ability of the
church to speak the truth to
elected public office holders.
According to him: “CAN has
become more visible in
relation to national prayer
sessions, pilgrimages,
alliances with state power
and so on.
“Unless we distance
ourselves, we cannot speak
the truth to power. We
cannot hear the wails of the
poor and the weak. We
should not be seen as
playing the praying wing of
the party in power.”
He challenged the church to
speak against corruption in
low and high places, saying
such responsibility must
never be jettisoned for any
reason.
Apart from Orisejafor, other
church leaders who own
private jets include Founder
of Living Faith Ministries,
Bishop David Oyedepo;
General Overseer of
Redeemed Christian Church
of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch
Adeboye; Founder of The
Redeemed Evangelical
Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike
Okonkwo and Pastor Chris
Oyakhilome of Christ
Embassy Church.

Scores of schoolchildren die in Egypt crash

At least 50 students are killed when a
train slams into their bus in Manfalut
city , state media says.
A speeding train has crashed into a
bus carrying children to their
kindergarten in southern Egypt , killing
at least 50 and wounding 17.
There were about 60 children
between four and six years old on the
bus when the crash occurred on
Saturday as the bus crossed tracks
near a village in Manfaloot district in
the southern province of Assiut.
" There are several deaths and injuries
among the pupils . They are being
counted and taken to hospitals ,"
Mamdouh al -Weshahi , a senior Health
Ministry official, was quoted as saying.
Al Jazeera' s Sherine Tadros , reporting
from Cairo , said: " The severity of the
wreckage was so bad that only 22
bodies or so came out in full and the
rest are in [pieces ]."
" That is why it 's difficult for the
rescuers to operate in the area ," she
said.
Books, school bags and socks
belonging to children were strewn
along the tracks near the mangled
bus. Parents of the missing wailed as
they looked for signs of their children
One witness said the train pushed the
bus along the tracks for nearly a
kilometre.
Two hospital officials said the
wounded were being treated in two
different facilities, many with severed
limbs .
An Egyptian official said it appeared
that the railroad crossing was not
closed as the train sped towards it . He
was speaking on condition of
anonymity because he was not
authorised to talk to the media .
President Mohamed Morsi has
ordered the prime minister , the
ministers of defence and health and
the governor of Assiut " to offer all the
assistance to the families of the
victims ", the MENA news agency said.
Transport Minister Rashad al -Metini
and the head of the Egyptian Railway
Authority have already resigned in the
wake of the accident, state media
reported .
Egypt 's railway system has a poor
safety record , mostly blamed on badly
maintained equipment , poor
management and reckless driving .
